So do a lot of the drums actually as well. I have BFD3 but always end up going back to Superior Drummer 2. so you can drop them a little as a complete group. There's nothing worse than balancing the kit perfectly only to find all the toms sit a little proud in the mix. This way I have EQ / level / FX control over individual kit pieces, kick / snare / metals / toms as groups, and the kit overall Kick and Snare route directly to the "Kit Aux"Īll toms channels route to the "TomsAux" and then to the kit auxĪll cymbals, hats, cowbells route to the "MetalsAux" and then to the kit aux the reason for this is to ensure that the fx inserts in the channel strips and the aux's are not over driven.Īll kit pieces have individual channel strips except for: so if the aux faders are lower than the individual channel faders, something ain't right. then, the "kit aux" will compress / limit the entire kit and sent it to the master outs. the "toms aux" will compress / limit them a little and make them a little louder. Make the level of the kit increase as it heads to the DAW's master output.Įxample: tom tracks lowest levels are on their individual DAW channel strips. you have loads of headroom so you can bring up the level of the kit in the DAW then set BFD's master level to somewhere between -6dB and -10dB. remember to mute the overhead / room mics etc so you are balancing the individual direct levels. in the BFD mixer, set all the faders to 0dB and then use the level control of each kit piece to balance them. Lil' tip: run BFD on the softer side levels wise so they do not enter the DAW channels too hot The cymbal and hi-hat DI's i always pull right down, sometimes to 0.
